NORFOLK - A Newport News man's determination to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association Southeastern Virginia Chapter will take him to great heights.

Brian Cole will attempt to get the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro -- at 19,340 feet - in tribute to one of his clients, 78-year-old John B. Hightower, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2012.

As many as 16 million Americans will have Alzheimer’s by 2050, association officials say, and Alzheimer’s is the sixth-leading cause of death in the U.S., and the only cause of death among the top 10 causes in America, without a way to prevent, cure or even slow its progression.

Cole runs Personal Training Associates in Newport News and this will be his second run at the top. The first climb in 2010 ended at 15,338 feet, when Cole was stricken with altitude sickness.

You can log on to track his journey, which begins February 22. You can donate a penny for each foot Cole climbs or any amount.

The money will go to the Alzheimer’s research. Tax deductible donations can also be taken by phone - at 800-272-3900 - or they can be mailed to:
