NEWPORT NEWS-- An elderly man was shot in the thigh after a bullet came through the wall of his home late Friday.

According to a press release, an officer working in the area of 24th Street and Chestnut Avenue heard several gunshots around 11:20 p.m.

Emergency dispatchers also received several calls about gunshots and a possible victim inside a home on Chestnut Avenue.

Upon arrival. officers and medics located a 77-year-old man inside a home with a gunshot wound to his thigh.

The man was transported to a hospital with an injury that was believed to be non-life threatening.

Investigators do not believe the victim was the intended target.

There was no other damage to homes or vehicles in the area.

Police have not released details about potential suspects in the case.
