NEWPORT NEWS-Police are warning homeowners about burglaries.

“Anytime there is an increase, we step up our enforcement and we try to get citizens be more alert,” Officer Harold Eley said.

Over the past two weeks, residents have reported 18 burglaries in the south precinct.  Thieves have targeted homes and a business on Peninsula Drive, 31st, Street. 36th Street, Morris Drive, Hampton Avenue, 45th Street, Marshal Avenue and Taylor Avenue.

The break-ins have occurred mostly after 5:00 p.m. while the victims were at work. Electronics, video games, computers and TVs were taken from the homes and one business.

“Neighbors need to be watchful. If you see anyone strange in the neighborhood please call police. We are approaching the holiday season so people are away from a lot,” Eley noted.

If you know anything about these burglaries or the persons responsible, call Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
