Police charged James Paddleford with assault and battery after he allegedly pushed his girlfriend and slammed her hand in a door as she attempted to leave his home Thursday evening.

NEWPORT NEWS -- A Newport News Police Sergeant is on unpaid administrative leave after he was charged with assaulting his girlfriend.

Police charged James Paddleford with assault and battery after he allegedly pushed his girlfriend and slammed her hand in a door as she attempted to leave his home Thursday evening. 

Paddleford was arrested and released on his signature pending an arraignment. 

Paddleford has been with the department since June 2001 and is assigned to the North Precinct. 

In addition to the criminal charges, an administrative investigation will be conducted by the department’s professional standards office.
