NEWPORT NEWS -- The hit-and-run accident happened more than one week ago, and on Monday the motorcyclist, 22-year old Ryan Oelschalger,  who was the victim of the Newport News accident is out of the intensive care unit.

Melissa Oelschlager is Ryan’s wife and she said her husband is not completely out of the woods yet, “He's pretty banged up.  He has a pelvic dysplasia, his right lung collapsed and he has a little bit of shrapnel in his neck but we're expecting that to heal up perfectly fine."

"They had to operate on that and put a couple of steel plates in. They also had to do that to his pelvis as well.  His arm surgery lasted for six hours and his pelvis surgery lasted for three,” Melissa detailed her husband’s recovery.

The suspect, William Selby, Jr. was charged with hit and run and being a habitual offender. Both are felonies.

To make matters worse, Melissa said the driver of the car didn’t have insurance and neither did her husband and medical bills are mounting. “I've talked to some people and we're at 106-thousand dollars for everything and it's just going up from here,” Mrs. Oelschalger said.

To help help with medical costs, Melissa is using this website for donations:  http://gfwd.at/1s163AX
