NEWPORT NEWS -- A Newport News mother was arrested early Friday morning after police say her 5-year-old son was found wandering the streets alone.
According to police, someone found the boy around 2 a.m. in the area of River Road and North Avenue. The boy was fully clothed and there were no reports that the child was harmed or injured.
Officers took custody of the child and began searching for the child's parents.
Following a 90 minute search, police located 25-year-old Kristy McClemmy inside a home in the 9500 block of River Road.
McClemmy and her son are currently homeless and were living in a detached garage at the residence, according to police.
McClemmy is charged with child neglect. She is currently being held in the Newport News City Jail without bond.
The boy has been turned over to Child Protective Services.
