NEWPORT NEWS--   A Newport News mother has been arrested for allegedly beating her 15-year-old daughter.

Police arrested 33-year-old Beverly Riddick of 32nd Street yesterday on a felony charge of abuse and neglect.

Police say a high school teacher noticed injuries on the teen and sent her to the nurse's office.

The student told the nurse she got into a fight with some girls.

When the student was checked a second time she told authorities her injuries to her back and arms came from her mother beating her with a switch until it broke and then using extension cord.

School officials reported the incident to child protective services who called police.

Police say the victim and a younger sibling are staying with other family members.
