NEWPORT NEWS--VDOT says it will resume work on the southbound span of the James River Bridge this weekend.
Single-lane, weekend closures, for both north— and southbound traffic will begin on Friday at 9 p.m. and will continue until Monday at 5 a.m.
Crews will be replacing the southbound grid deck. VDOT says at least five additional weekend lane closures will be required to complete all of the bridge work. Single-lane closures will continue until mid-December. Future single lane closures are scheduled as follows:
• Nov. 16th from 9 p.m. through Nov. 19th at 5 a.m.(northbound)
• No work will be scheduled over Thanksgiving Holiday weekend
• Nov. 30th from 9 p.m. through Dec. 3rd at 5 a.m. (northbound)
• Dec. 7th from 9 p.m. through Dec. 10th at 5 a.m. (northbound)
In addition, on Monday, Nov. 12th, crews will perform four, brief bridge lifts to confirm that the counterweights of the bridge lift mechanism are functioning. The lifts will last up to 15 minutes and will occur between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.
During the weekend work, north—and southbound traffic will be able to use the bridge. All of the work is weather dependent.
VDOT is recommending that motorists take Interstate 664 Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel as an alternate route.
