NEWPORT NEWS --- A man shot when three men stormed into a home Monday night has died.

Police say the home invasion occurred around 9:20 p.m. at Jeffrey Alan Summers' home in the 400 block of S. Menchville Road.

Another man in the home was hit with the butt of the rifle, said spokeswoman Holly McPherson.

According to police, four people were in the home when the suspects, wearing masks and carrying long guns, forced their way into the residence. Three victims were forced to the floor and then Summers was shot. The fourth person in the home was in another room, according to police.

The survivors told police the suspects left empty handed when a pit bull went on the attack.

Summers, 51, died at the hospital just before 7:00 a.m. Tuesday.
