NEWPORT NEWS-Police say a man was shot when he stopped to ask for directions.

It happened around 1:45 p.m. Sunday in the 600 block of 12th Street.  

The 35-year-old man told officers the two men first tried to rob him and then shot at him when broke away and rode off on his bicycle. A bullet struck him in the elbow, said Officer Harold Eley.

Eley says one suspect is in his late teens and was wearing a red/white baseball cap and gold color sunglasses. The gunman had on a blue T-shirt and jeans. He was carrying a .32 or .38 caliber revolver.
