NEWPORT NEWS -- A 16-year-old was found dead behind a home in the Southeast Community of Newport News early Friday.
Police were called to the 3300 block of Roanoke Avenue around 6:00 a.m. and found the body of Christopher Ravon Southerland, an 11th grader at Heritage High School.
Spokesman Lou Thurston says residents in the area have told investigators they heard several gunshots around 9:30 and 10:00 p.m. Thursday but didn't call police.
He added that some evidence indicates that the shooting may have occurred a short distance away and that Southerland made his way to where he was found.
A crisis team has been at Heritage High School to help students and staff cope.
