NEWPORT NEWS -- Police say a man threatened his elderly mother and briefly refused to come out of the house early Wednesday.

Officers say the 51-year-old man was inside the home on St. George Place for about an hour when he came out of the house holding weapons that turned out to be toy replicas of a rifle and a revolver.

Authorities arrived at the Denbigh-area home around 12:30 a.m. and found the woman outside.

"She said he assaulted her and threatened to shoot her," said police spokeswoman Harold Eley.

Her 42-year-old daughter asleep in the home wasn't hurt.

The man's name and charges haven't been released.

The SWAT team was called to the scene but wasn't used, Eley noted.
