NEWPORT NEWS (AP) -- The USS Merrimack will be recycled in the city where it was built.

The Office of Congressional and Public Affairs in Washington, D.C., says the vessel is set to depart the James River Reserve Fleet on Tuesday. It is headed for Southern Recycling LLC of New Orleans.

The 700-foot USS Merrimack was built in 1980 in New Orleans as part of a Navy fleet of oilers.

Among its deployments include the North Sea, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. It remained in service until 1996 and was decommissioned by the Navy in 1998. It was then transferred to the Maritime Administration’s James River Reserve Fleet for disposal on November 29, 2001.
