Game's Farmers Market

NEWPORT NEWS - Game's Farmers Market, a family-owned grocery store in Newport News, has been a staple for shoppers for years.

The store on Harpersville Road has a small town feel - employees know customers by name and people travel for miles for the meat department.

A store employee hopes that's enough to keep them coming once the Walmart Market grocery store opens next month.  It will be within walking distance of Game's and the promise of lower prices on many items could be tempting to otherwise loyal customers.

The business has made it through tough times before.  It bounced back after an electrical fire in February 2007 burned it to the ground. The family rebuilt and by that December, the market was back open.

Walmart also plans to open a Supercenter in February.  It will be about four miles from Game's at Jefferson Avenue and Mercury Blvd.
