NEWPORT NEWS -- Do you have a green thumb but no room to plant a garden?
If you live in Newport News, you can rent a plot of land for $30.00 as part of the Community Garden program.
The plots, available on a first-come, first-served, basis, are about 18’ X 40’ in size. The site is an open field at 75 Yorktown Road in the Lee Hall area.
"The garden has 112 plots and we currently have about a dozen plots still available," said Lindsay M. Carroll, the city's Park Event coordinator.
The $30 fee covers the season which starts in April and lasts through November 30.
The garden opened back in 2011 with 76 plots.
"Since then, we added a water source. This year, we're installing a permanent chain link fence around the perimeter of the garden to try and deter the deer and other wildlife," Carroll added.
Fill out the application and submit it for review. If accepted, you'll receive information about your plot assignment from the Community Garden Coordinator.
