NEWPORT NEWS -- A young boy was killed when a large tree fell through his apartment.
Police said 11-year-old Zahir Robinson and his mother Angela Anthony were lying on the bed in their unit at Brookridge Apartments on Fairfax Avenue just after noon. The tree fell through, pinning the boy. The mother was rescued.
A crane was brought in to remove the tree so rescuers could reach him.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Zahir was an honor roll student going into the sixth grade.
His mom says he asked her all week to make him some vegetables and that was his last meal. She said he went to bed, kissed her good night, and said 'I love you.' That was the last time she saw her son alive.
The building has been condemned by the Fire Department.
The mayor offered words of condolence.
“I am saddened to learn of this unfortunate tragedy,” said Mayor McKinley L. Price. “My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of this young child. I urge our residents to take all precautions necessary to remain safe during and after this storm.”
