NEWPORT NEWS -- Just days after announcing the beginning of PEOPLExpress at Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport comes news of an airline ending service.
Allegiant Air says its last day will be August 11.
"We are always disappointed to end service in a market," said Eric Fletcher, Allegiant Travel Co. manager of airports.
Spokeswoman Jessica Wheeler explained the decision to leave to WVEC.com.
"Unfortunately, we were not seeing the demand on the route that we would like to, and with a rise in airport costs approaching, the service no longer made sense for the business," she said.
Customers with reservations beyond that date will be contacted directly by Allegiant for a full refund.
"We thank the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport for their partnership and apologize to any travelers who are inconvenienced by this decision," Fletcher added.
Las Vegas-based Allegiant began service from the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport on Nov. 16, 2011.
