Ahead of Irene, classes cancelled, some students told to leave campus

NEWPORT NEWS -- Because of the risk of high winds and rain and for the safety of students and facility, Christopher Newport University has canceling classes for Friday and Monday.

In an alert to students, officials said they must leave their campus dorms by noon Friday and urged them to take things with them to avoid damage. But anything left inside should be raised off the floor or covered with plastic as a precaution.

The residence halls won't reopen until 4:00 p.m. Monday.

Dining halls will close at 10:30 a.m. Friday.

Classes are expected to resume on August 30 and missed classes will be made up October 17-18.

The alert states students with problems leaving campus should contact the office of the Dean of Students, 3rd floor DSU, (757) 594-7160.

All campus events scheduled for Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday are canceled. All buildings will be closed Friday at 5:00 p.m. and will reopen Monday at noon.

Old Dominion University will now close at noon Friday, Aug. 26.

Norfolk State University has cancelled classes for Friday and Saturday.

Officials said students who live on campus who can leave should do so after classes Thursday. They ask students who live on campus to notify their residence hall coordinators about what they'll do or to email housing@nsu.edu

NSU faculty and staff are expected to work Friday, August 26 during their regularly scheduled times.

On Saturday, August 27 and Sunday, August 28, essential personnel should contact their supervisors to determine scheduled reporting times.

Classes at Elizabeth City State University will be canceled by noon Friday and all day Saturday.

Student evacuation is strongly encouraged by noon Friday when the residence halls will close.

International students and students who cannot arrange lodging away from the area will be housed in the R. L. Vaughan Center. Students who cannot arrange lodging should inform their residence hall director immediately.

Eastern Virginia Medical School cancelled classes for Friday due to the potential impact of Irene.  Students on clinical rotations should follow the instructions of their clinical program directors.

The College of William and Mary has canceled classes Friday through Monday.
