NORFOLK-Twenty-six people are charged with running drugs on the Peninsula.
Twenty-three were caught Wednesday in a federal sweep called "Dragon's Lair."
“After law enforcement dismantled the major heroin trafficking rings in Tidewater, this organization allegedly stepped in to fill the demand,” said U.S. Attorney Neil MacBride.
MacBride said a handful of people have overdosed on heroin and died since October 2012.
The Drug Enforcement Agency said the operation targeted "an extremely violent cocaine and heroin drug trafficking organization operating in the Newport News and Hampton Roads areas of Virginia for more than a decade."
Police are still looking for three suspects, 26-year-old Dominic Walker, 24-year-old Andrea Barrett and 35-year-old Jatadia Sirica Cook. All three are charged with conspiracy to distribute 1000 or more grams of cocaine/heroin.
The suspects that were arrested Wendesday are due in U.S. District Court in Norfolk at 3:00 p.m.
Christopher Devon Barrett, 26, of Hampton and 12 others are charged with conspiracy to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine, 280 grams or more of crack cocaine and one kilogram or more of heroin.
Following a prisoner's heroin overdose death in September 2008 at the Newport News City Farm, authorities say they pushed hard to stop heroin abuse and were able to prosecute more than 70 people and end stop three heroins drug trafficking organizations.
Barrett is alleged to be the leader of the organization, arranging for suppliers and running the day-to-day affairs of the conspiracy from the Colonial Landing Apartment complex in Hampton, according to federal authorities.

In a related indictment, 38-year-old Steven Lavonne Morris of Newport News is alleged to be the leader of a cocaine drug trafficking organization supplied by sources in New York City and Atlanta that brought the drug to the Peninsula.
Federal authorities say Morris and Barrett worked together to buy cocaine through the same sources in New York and distribute it throughout Tidewater.
