NEWPORT NEWS-Two men were shot early Thursday in a robbery attempt in the East End of Newport News.

It happened around 2:00 a.m. in the area of 19th Street and Cedar Ave.

Investigators say they were in a car and one of them, a 35-year-old, got out and started walking. He was approached by two men, one with a gun, and during a struggle, he was shot in the thigh, said spokeswoman Holly McPherson.

The 33-year-old driver saw what was happening and went to help his friend.  That's when the suspect fired at the car and struck him in the ankle, she added.

The first victim made it to a relative's house; the driver went to a fire station in Hampton and got help.

Both men were treated and released from the hospital.

Anyone with information about this shooting can call Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
