NORFOLK-Thousands of people were stuck at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Wednesday morning because an SUV overturned inside the westbound tube.
It happened during rush hour on I-64 West, forcing the Va. Department of Transportation to stop traffic so emergency crews could get inside.
A 2000 black SUV Mercury Mountaineer driven by 23-year-old Jasmine Leshea Thornton swerved to avoid vehicle in front of her and struck tunnel wall head on, Sgt. Michelle Anaya told WVEC.com. The impact caused her vehicle to overturn.
Drivers were being diverted at 4th View and urged to take I-664 northbound - the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel - to get to the Peninsula.
People who were caught on the approach to the tunnel were allowed onto the plaza and directed onto I-64 Eastbound. That required VDOT to stop drivers headed from the Peninsula to Southside, causing a backup on the Hampton side of the span.
At 11:00 a.m., all lanes were opened and there was a seven-mile delay to Tidewater Drive, VDOT reported.
Thornton was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Charges are pending, Sgt. Anaya stated.
