HAMPTON -- Members of the Newport News Bomb Squad detonated a safe Sunday evening that police originally considered suspicious.

Hampton Police Division said the safe, found in the parking lot of Hampton Woods Plaza Shopping Center in the 1100 block of Big Bethel Road, had nothing in it.

Public Safety Communications received a call about the safe at 6:20 p.m.

Emergency crews responded. 3 businesses were evacuated until public safety workers determined the situation was safe. The businesses were allowed to reopen shortly after the detonation.
