HAMPTON -- Police are looking for the person who shot a 24-year-old as he walked down Grimes Road this weekend.
Officers said it happened at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday in the 2000 block of Grimes, between Seward and Hastings Drives.
Neighbors told 13News Now several children were outside at the time of the shooting. Some of those neighbors saw the 24-year-old walking with another person, when a car came up behind the pair.
Someone inside the car started firing, hitting the 24-year-old in the upper part of his body. He fell to the ground.
"We didn't know his true condition," said Patrick Linkous who heard gunshots and ran to see if he could help. "We knew he was alive. He was talking. He was coherent, and near the end, he was starting to doze off, but we kept him awake."
People in the neighborhood said while the 24-year-old still was awake, he told police who shot him. Paramedics took him to the hospital. Officers said his condition was critical.
Police have not said if they arrested anyone.
The shooting on Grimes Road was the third shooting in the city since Friday.
Officers believe Shalik Wynn tried to rob 2 people in a car that afternoon on Spanish Trail. He's accused of shooting and killing 18-year-old Elijah-Juan Zaire in the process.
At about 5:30 a.m. Saturday, officers believe 25-year-old Kwaume Edwards shot Jonathan Coles at a home on Newport News Avenue. Police found his body inside the house.
