HAMPTON - A man was found shot to death in the parking lot of a 7-Eleven on West Queen St. Wednesday night.
At 11:19 p.m., Hampton police say they got several calls about shots being fired in the area. When they arrived, they found 27-year-old Robert Jason Sheene lying face down behind a car. The front driver side door of Chevy Malibu was open and the windows on both sides were broken out.
Investigators say Sheene had been shot once in his upper body.
Police believe Sheene got into a verbal altercation with individuals in the parking lot, firearms were brandished and Sheen was shot.
Police say 33-year-old Marcus Antonio Pelham was in the parking lot when the incident occurred. Pelham has been arrested and charged with one count of possession of a firearm while in possession of narcotics, one count of possession of narcotics with the intent to distribute and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Pelham has not, however, been charged with Sheene's murder.
Another bullet flew across the street and hit Eunice Ward's house. She was playing cards at her kitchen table with family and friends when a loud noise startled everyone. At first, Ward thought a picture had fallen. On closer inspection, she found a bullet hole in her living room wall.
"It came in at an angle and hit the side of the bookcase," she said. "Had that bookcase not been there, it could have traveled right into the area where we were playing cards."
She said she's thankful no one in her home was hurt.
Investigators are looking at surveillance video from the store as they try to determine the circumstances that led to Sheene's death. Meantime, the car was towed away as evidence.
Police told WVEC.com Sheene did not live in the area where he was killed, but he did live in Hampton.
