HAMPTON - Hampton firefighters rescued a man from a fire at the King Street Commons apartments early Wednesday.

Flames and smoke were rising from one of the buildings when firefighters arrived at Tudor Court around 12:30 a.m.

The man was at a second-story window when firefighters pulled him to safety.

Residents banged on doors to wake each other up. Marvin Scott says he saw a woman yelling for help, so he and another man helped her out.

"I thank God that I was able to get up and go help somebody else and that nobody died this night" said Scott

The fire was under control in about 45 minutes.

According to Capt. Jeff Pereira, 13 people, including four children, are being helped by the Red Cross.

The cause of the fire, which damaged as many as six units, is under investigation.

Jennifer Frank with the American Red Cross Coastal Virginia Region says five families are getting help with food, lodging and clothing. She also said that the apartment management is working with the residents to establish long-term housing plans.
