PORTSMOUTH-Across Hampton Roads, community organizations are getting a big boost from the sailors of USS Abraham Lincoln.
More than 1,000 men and women are giving their time and energy to groups like Habitat for Humanity in Hampton and Hoffler Creek Wildlife Foundation in Portsmouth. At City Park in Portsmouth Friday morning, 150 sailors picked up trash and raked leaves and did other sprucing up.
They also were visiting elementary and middle schools in Newport News and cleaning up beaches and parks in Virginia Beach.
Lincoln crewmembers have been involved in the community since the carrier arrived in Hampton Roads in August 2012 for a four-year overhaul. The Navy said the work at Newport News Shipbuilding will double the flattop's lifespan to about 50 years.
Lincoln is usually homeported in Washington.
