CHAPEL HILL, NC- Despite getting the highest seed in school and MEAC history, the Hampton Lady Pirates feel like they are being underestimated.
Hampton finished the year 28-6 with a perfect record in the MEAC. They won the conference tournament and earned at #12 seed here in Chapel Hill. Sunday, they play Big 10 regular season co-champion Michigan State, the #5 seed.
The team addressed a small group of media in Chapel Hill at a Saturday press conference.
Senior forward Alyssa Bennett, who scored 10.1 points per game and led the team in rebounding, says "I don't think we're getting respect even though we got the 12 seed...but we'll show 'em."
Coach David Six, in his 6th season at Hampton, feels like is team is ready to match up with a team from a power conference like Michigan State. ""We play an ambitious out of conference and i think that has prepared us for this moment", Six says.
Like many of her teammates, playing in the NCAA Tournament is nothing new to senior guard Nicole Hamilton. She says "You have bigger and better teams in the NCAA. We just have to match their intensity with our intensity".
Freshman Malia Tate-DeFreitas led the team in scoring, but has never played in the tournament before. She says "I think I'm going to handle things pretty good as long as i stay physical and stay aggressive and always in attack mode"
Hampton's game vs. Michigan State on Sunday afternoon tips off at 12:30 PM and will be televised by ESPN2.
