HAMPTON-- Police are looking for whoever broke into a home, burglarized it, and killed the owner's dog.

Officers were called to a residence in the 300 block of Locust Avenue at around 3:20 p.m on Tuesday for a report of a burglary.

The resident told police she returned to her home and discovered that it had been burglarized and that her dog had been killed.

According to police, the dog suffered head injuries but indicated the exact cause of death would have to be determined by  a necropsy.

Police say someone entered the house  through an unlocked rear window. Once inside,  they rummaged through the home, removing electronic gaming equipment and an undisclosed
amount of money.

Hampton Animal Control  transported the dog to the state veterinary lab.

The investigation is on-going and anyone with information is asked to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
