HAMPTON -- In the aftermath of the mass killings at a Colorado movie theater early Friday, the Hampton Police Division is increasing its presence and patrols at movie theaters throughout the city.

Officials say they're moving to reassure anyone who wants to head to theaters to see The Dark Knight Returns or any other film.

"The increased presence starts today and will run through the weekend. After the weekend, we'll reassess the situation to determine if the increased presence is still needed," police spokesman Cpl. Jason Price told WVEC.com.

Authorities ask that patrons report any suspicious activity to police by calling 727-6111 or 727-6505. If it is an emergency, please call 911.

The theater at Military Circle in Norfolk had a midnight showing of the latest Batman movie. Mall security says there were no problems. Officials say there will be patrols in the mall parking lots and inside the mall where the movie is showing.

Should you be concerned for your safety or rethink plans to go to the movies this weekend? Bill McCoy with Signal 88, a company that provides security for movie theaters in Hampton Roads, says no.

"All the theaters in Hampton Roads, from what I’ve seen, have uniformed police officer presence in addition to private security,” he said.
