HAMPTON -- Fire has damaged a school in Hampton.

No one was hurt during the fire which broke out about 2:00 Monday afternoon at the former Mary Peake Center which the Downtown Hampton Child Development Center leases from Hampton City Schools.  That's located at 1306 Thomas Street.

The school's fire alarm sounded at 2:00.  Everyone made it out safely.

The first crew on the scene reported smoke and flames coming from the windows, according to Lt. Anthony Chittum with the Hampton Division of Fire and Rescue. Firefighters later determined the blaze was caused by a heater that malfunctioned.

The fire was contained to two offices; however, those areas as well as a hallway suffered heavy smoke damage.

The school will be closed Tuesday.  There's no word yet on any plans after that.

The Child Development Center serves about 180 children from infants to five years.
