HAMPTON –  Police say the driver of a dump truck who ran a red light and crashed into several cars on Tuesday has been charged with reckless driving.

The crash happened around 10:30 a.m. at Magruder Boulevard at Butler Farm Road and forced police to close the area for about three and a half hours.

Police say Thomas Randolph Davis, 40, ran the red light, swerved to the left to avoid hitting cars and oveturned. The vehicle struck seven vehicles that were stopped in the left turn lane.

Three people including the truck driver were trapped.  The driver of a van was flown to the hospital and two others were taken by ambulance.

"The guy in the dump truck, he was trapped and kind of dangling too at the same time," described witness Dustin Marx.  "Made sure he was all right first and told the guy to turn off the engine."

Police believe the injuries are non-life threatening.  Six others were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

The dump truck was loaded with gravel, which spilled onto the road.

This accident was the second serious crash to happen on Magruder Boulevard Tuesday morning.
