HAMPTON -- Investigators determined that an early morning apartment fire was caused by ashes from burning incense.

Around 3:00 a.m. fire crews responded to Mariner's Cove Road and found fire coming from the balcony of a third floor apartment.

A working smoke detector and the smell of smoke alerted the two people inside the unit.

They were able to escape the fire before crews arrived by using an outside stairway.

The cause of the fire was ruled accidental due to ashes that fell into a trash can causing it to catch fire and then spread to a nearby sofa.

A dog died in the fire and no injuries were reported. The Red Cross is assisting the victims.
