UPDATE  4 p.m.: Fire officials have confirmed that the fire that broke out overnight in the 100 block of Booker Street in Hampton was caused by "careless smoking".

Hampton Fire Assistant Chief Jeffrey Pereira says the fire originated between the cushions of a couch. When fire crews arrived, they found heavy fire in the attic. A large part of the roof of the home was destroyed.

They have deemed the fire "accidential".

HAMPTON -- A family of eight escaped fire that badly damaged their home in Hampton.

Crews were called to Booker Street in Phoebus around 12:15 a.m. Capt. Jeff Pereira says the two adults and six children were outside and okay when firefighters arrived.

Flames were shooting through the roof, he said.

The fire caused extensive damage to the home.  Signs on the building say it's structurally unsound.

The Red Cross is helping the family.
