HAMPTON-- A 7-year old girl died several hours after being hit by a car as she tried to cross at Kecoughtan and Robinson roads around 5:55 p.m. Thursday.
Police say she passed away at the hospital at 11:22 p.m. Her family was with her, said Pastor Clint Mitchell of Wythe Presbyterian Church.
He met with Ar Blut Paw's family at their apartment on Friday and church members posted on Facebook that they were dealing with unspeakable sadness.
Pastor Mitchell said she was the youngest of eight and was going to a church event when she was hit just before 6:00 p.m.
He said the family spent 11 years in a refugee camp in Thailand before coming to the U.S. They'd joined the church about a month ago and attended evening services that are conducted in Burmese. He said Paw was learning English but didn't speak it.
Mitchell says the community is doing what it can to help.
"Other than language issues, the biggest thing right now there's a family that's heartbroken because they lost their daughter and tha'ts the same in any language," he said.
A relief fund has been established at the church, called Myanmar Family Crisis Fund, which will help with funeral expenses and counseling for an older sister who saw the crash.
Investigators from the Hampton Police Division's Fatal Crash Team spent hours reconstructing the scene to try and determine exactly what happened.
No charges have been filed and police said speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash.
