CHESAPEAKE -- A Virginia State Trooper was injured early Wednesday morning after a crash on the Gilmerton Bridge.

Investigators say Sergeant V. Smith was parked in a well-marked, closed work zone with his lights on when an SUV slammed into his cruiser around 1:30 a.m.

24-year-old Billinda Nicole Colonna is charged with DUI.  State Police said she had a .08 blood alcohol content.

"When you find out it's one of your own men, everyone drops what they're doing," said Sgt. Michelle Anaya. "The driver was impaired and this could have been prevented."

Sgt. Smith was taken to the hospital.  He has a broken femur and was undergoing tests late in the morning, Anaya stated.
