CHESAPEAKE -- A working smoke detector helped two people escape from a burning house in Riverwalk on Christmas Eve.
Crews arrived at a home in the 1300 block of Monarch Reach at 6:15 p.m. and found heavy fire coming from a garage.
A spokesperson with the fire department says crews gained control of the fire around 7:45 p.m.
Three adults live in the home, but only two were inside during the fire. They were alerted by a smoke detector and were able to safely escape.
