RICHMOND-Virginia Transportation Secretary Aubrey Layne says there could soon be a bill in Richmond that would eliminate extra costs associated with E-Z pass purchases.

In Virginia, there is a one-time cost of $35 for a transponder and a $.50 monthly fee.  The $35 goes into your account to use for the tolls.

"I know one of the things that's working it's way through the assembly is how we can eliminate that fee," said Layne. "The governor has made it clear that we'll support that bill if it comes through."

Thousands of Virginians are currently buying their E-Z pass transponders from other states.  More than 2,000 people have purchased their passes from Massachusetts to avoid paying upfront and ongoing maintenance fees.

Layne says the McAuliffe administration is working on other ways to lessen the impact of tolls, but he did not give specifics.
