CHESAPEAKE -- A senior citizen was attacked in September at the Hampton Roads Executive Airport has died of his injuries.
On September 27, Charles Silva was working on a tractor he used to mow grass in remote parts of the airport when he encountered three trespassers riding ATVs. When he confronted them for trespassing, they beat him. Silva was able to drive himself to the hospital.
According to police spokeswoman Officer Kelly O'Sullivan, one of them was 23-year-old Kyle Langreder. He's charged with Malicious Wounding by Mob and other charges are pending.
Ted Kuhlman had been friends with Silva for decades. "He heard these guys, and I guess confronted them, and they said they had permission. He said, 'No, you don't. I'm the one who gives the permission. You don't have permission,'" Kuhlman recalled.
Silva, who was part of a local hunting club, helped maintain some of the airport's outlying areas.
"In 40 years, we've run 100 people off there. Most of 'em, a lot of 'em, have had guns, you know. We catch somebody out there trespassing or whatever, and you have to run 'em down sometimes and catch 'em and tell 'em to get off, and, like I say, usually, the worst that happens is they might give you a little bit of mouth," Kuhlman explained.
Kuhlman visited Silva in the hospital the day after the beating which left the 77-year-old bruised and swollen, as well as disoriented.
According to the Chesapeake General District Court online docket, Langreder was arrested October 10 is due in court on November 20.
