CHESAPEAKE - Many drivers made their way to the South Norfolk Jordan Bridge while the Gilmerton Bridge was closed last week.
They paid a reduced fare to cross during that time and that $1.00 discount will continue for another week, even though the Gilmerton reopened Monday night.
Bridge officials say the discount on the toll will remain in place until midnight January 20 since the Gilmerton was supposed to be shut down for two weeks while the new bridge lift span was floated in and connected to the tower structures.
The new lift has a 35-foot clearance instead of 11 feet, so more boats can pass without having to stop traffic.
The new bridge is expected to open in 2014 at an estimated cost of $134,000,000.
The Gilmerton Bridge is on Rt. 13/Military Highway and crosses the southern branch of the Elizabeth River.
