CHESAPEAKE - Good news for people who drive the Gilmerton Bridge in Chesapeake - three new lanes will open Tuesday morning.
As of 5:00 a.m., there will be two bridge lanes for westbound traffic and one for eastbound drivers on the span over the southern branch of the Elizabeth River on Route 13, the Va. Dept. of Transportation said Monday.
Officials will continue work to get all four lanes open later this fall, so for now, the Gilmerton will continue to be closed weeknights, Sunday through Thursday, from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
The bridge will be taller so there will be fewer openings for boats to delay drivers.
The project begin in November 2009 and is scheduled to be completed in January 2014.
Detours are the High Rise Bridge and the South Norfolk Jordan Bridge.
