CHESAPEAKE - A  man was killed when crashed his SUV into a pole following a brief pursuit, Chesapeake Police said.

Officers say they tried to pull over the driver on Volvo Parkway around midnight, but he took off, leading them on a short pursuit down Greenbrier Parkway.  He struck a pole at the intersection of Crossways Blvd. and Greenbrier near the Greenbrier Mall.

Officers say the man was suspected of firing into a house on Center Mass Crest in the Western Branch neighborhood about 30 minutes earlier.  No one was hurt in that shooting.

Police say the homeowner knew the gunman and gave investigators a description and his car and his home address.

A neighbor said he heard five or six shots, adding the gunfire was so loud that it woke him up.

The driver's name hasn't been released and the investigations into the crash and that shooting continue.
