CHESAPEAKE-- A Butts Road Intermediate School teacher has been charged with assault after allegedly injuring a student.
The child's mother claims the incident happened during a lesson involving "Islamic hand signs."
According to police spokeswoman Kelly O’Sullivan, Tara Harris has been charged with simple assault for an incident that happened at school on Oct. 2.
O'Sullivan would not give further details on the charges.
Stephanie Bennett, the mother of the 10-year-old girl injured, filed the complaint.
According to Bennett, her daughter’s hand was cut when Harris jerked her arm while trying to force her to do Islamic hand signs.
She said her daughter has a learning disability that makes it hard for her to process information.
Tom Cupitt with Chesapeake Schools says, " Harris has been charged with an offense that calls for suspension. As per the Code of Virginia, her pay is being placed in an escrow account. Other than this, we cannot comment any further since it is a personnel matter."
However, Bennett says Harris is no longer at the school.
Harris could not be reached for comment.
