CHESAPEAKE – Some local kindergartners got a life lesson Wednesday.

Students at Primrose School went shopping at Farm Fresh on Cedar Road, all to help stock the shelves of the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia.

Some of the goals of the shopping trip were to help students understand the value of generosity and to create a hands-on approach to math, nutrition and planning skills.

The children raised the  money by doing chores at home.

"We have collected chore money over a month period - preschool, pre-k and kindergarten - we all combined and got over $300," proudly said teacher Kendra James.

11 kindergartners went to the store, armed with detailed lists.  And accompanying them, some grandparents.  The school worked in their adopt-a-grandparent program.

"It's fantastic!  It's a great way to learn how to share at the holiday time and Primrose does really good with community and involving all the family members, the grandparents, the brothers and sisters,” said grandparent Vicky Fabian.  “It's just a great place to be and the kids are learning a lot about the holiday time and how to share with others."

The class that collects the most food items for the annual food drive will get a pizza party. Primrose School will deliver the food they've purchased and collected to the foodbank on Monday morning. The children will also get a tour of the foodbank's facilities.
