CHESAPEAKE-- Police say an 8-year-old boy drowned at a hotel swimming pool in Chesapeake on Saturday.

According to police, the Portsmouth child was attending a birthday pool party at the Sleep Inn at 3280 Western Branch Blvd.

The child was taken to Bon Secours Maryview Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police say the boy was not swimming alone and it appears to be an accidental drowning, but the investigation into the incident continues.

The boy went to Churchland Academy Elementary School.  The school sent a letter home to parents informing them of the loss.

"It saddened me. I mean, any kid passing is going to make you sad. but it's really sad because it hits close to home with him being in the school system and could be friends with your own kids," said Kimberly Cooper, whose child attends the school.

The child's name has not been released.
