VIRGINIA BEACH -- Four Bottom Dollar stores - two in Newport News and one each in Portsmouth and Va. Beach will be closing within 30 days, the company announced Thursday.

12 Bloom and Bottom Dollar stores across Hampton Roads will become Food Lions and the conversion process will begin immediately.

"It's just a shout around the corner," said Ed Saunders, who shops at the Jefferson Ave. store. "Food keeps on going up and up and up, and they blame it on gas, but when gas comes back down, the food don't come back down, so you got to save where you can and this is a great place to do it."

Richie Banner, owner of Lily's Furniture and Mattress, said he's gotten business from customers going into the store.

"It definitely wouldn't help business, but it depends on what the landlord can do to get somebody else in there," he said.

Delhaize America says it's closing 126 stores in all, retiring the Bloom banner in a move to strength the Food Lion brand.

The moves will affect about 4,900 workers at its stores in Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland and Florida. The company they'll get severance as eligible and will work with government officials to assist with transition support.

The company says it hopes associates will apply for open positions within the company.

Most associates working at converted stores will continue to work at these locations.

The company also is ending operations of its distribution center located in Clinton, Tenn.

Ron Hodge, CEO of Delhaize America, said in a press release, "While these were difficult decisions given the impact on our associates, customers and communities, we believe these actions will enable us to better serve our customers in our markets with high density, while positioning the company for future growth."
