10:40 a.m. UPDATE: The fire appears to be accidental, possibly related to a malfunctioning refrigerator inside of the fire damaged unit.
Brian Taylor, who reported the fire, said he'd just finished up business in his storage unit.
"I saw smoke coming from the building and I drove back by and I saw smoke coming out of the doors of three units."

CHESAPEAKE -- Fire damaged several units at a Chesapeake storage unit facility.

Crews were called to Happy Boxes Self Storage at 2413 Gum Road around 4:30 a.m. after smoke was reported coming from three of the units.

About 20 minutes later, firefighters called a second alarm and got more crews and EMS teams to the scene in Western Branch.

"We called the 2nd alarm because these things tend to spread," said Assistant Fire Marshal Capt. Scott Saunders.   "There's very little fire stop between the storage units."

One unit was burned and there is smoke damage to surrounding units, he added.

There was no word of any injuries.

The 2400 block of Gum Road is blocked by fire trucks, but crews hoped to have the road open, or at least a lane open, by 7 a.m.

An investigator will work to determine what sparked the fire.
