Norfolk, Va. - Feb. 16, 2011 - Virginia Natural Gas is pleased to announce the winners of the energySMART Activity and Essay contest.
Richard Berkley of Jenkins Elementary School in Newport News and Sydney Corey of Nansemond Parkway Elementary School in Suffolk are the Grand Prize winners. Each will receive a $100 gift certificate to either Taylor's Do it Center or Ace Peninsula Hardware in addition to an energySMART prize pack. School division winners include Brian Quillin of Cool Springs Elementary School in Mechanicsville and Jordan Spigner of W. M. Cooper Elementary Magnet School for Technology in Hampton.
The contest, the first offered by the company under its energySMART program, encouraged third grade students to learn the many ways their families could save energy and money by making their homes more efficient.
"Students were asked to visit the Environmental Protection Agency’s website to conduct a carbon calculation of their home. This data provided the children with a guideline on the efficiency of their home," said Jodi Gidley, president, Virginia Natural Gas.
Armed with information, students were asked to research and create an energySMART Home Efficiency Plan. They then wrote an essay between 250 to 500 words describing how their plan would save energy and increase efficiency.
The winners received an energySMART prize pack: a pizza party for their class, a weatherization kit for their home, an energySMART trophy, plus their picture posted on the Virginia Natural Gas website.
