What Can You Do Right Now?

Set sprinklers to water the lawn or garden only - not the street or sidewalk.

Use the microwave to cook small meals. (It uses less power than an oven.)

Purchase "Green Power" for your home's electricity. (Contact your power supplier to see where and if it is available.)

Scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher; wash only full loads.

Cut back on air conditioning and heating use if you can.

Turn off appliances and lights when you leave the room.

NORFOLK  -- The Virginia Port Authority is going green.

VPA has purchased three low-emission hybrid locomotives for rail operations at Norfolk International Terminals. Officials estimate they’ll save about $143,000 a year in fuel costs.

An EPA grant helped pay for the $3.6 million trio of new locomotives. The first will arrive next month; the other two should be delivered next spring.

VPA also is the first major East Coast port operator to have a certified environmental management system designed to cut down on pollution, reduce waste and the impact of the terminals on Hampton Roads.

“The VPA has always been committed to taking care of the area’s waterways and there is a long record of that work,” said Jerry A. Bridges, the VPA’s executive director.

The authority owns and operates Newport News Marine Terminal, Norfolk International Terminals and the Portsmouth Marine Terminal and the Inland Port in Front Royal.
