RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- The Carolinas are getting socked by a winter storm that has brought freezing rain and snow to some places in the Southeast.
Gov. Beverly Perdue declared a state of emergency Saturday as forecasters predicted sleet in the western mountains would later turn to snow. Officials said the storm was not as severe as expected but cautioned that conditions could become treacherous later with slick roads becoming icy.
13News viewers on the Outer Banks and elsewhere in northeastern North Carolina sent in photos of the snowfall, which measured as much as 8" in some locations by late Saturday morning.
A winter storm warning is in effect until Saturday night for northwestern South Carolina, and areas in the central part of the state were under an ice storm warning until 7 p.m.
Duke Energy reported 33,000 North Carolina customers were without power Saturday, mostly in the western mountains. Power was out for about 13,000 Duke customers in South Carolina.
