WILLIAMSBURG -- The Williamsburg-James City County school district might be the latest to cut teacher jobs.
Due to a million dollar budget shortfall, a proposal will be presented to the school board Tuesday night, recommending the elimination of more than 50 jobs as well as funding for some extra- curricular activities.
20 of the jobs on the table are teacher positions.
Tammy Cox said she moved to the county partly because of the schools.
"I know they got the best interest of the kids in mind," said Cox. "But you can't cut the people that you count on. These are the people you count on."
Eliminating middle school athletics would save tens of thousands of dollars. President of the school division's PTA council, Jennifer Taylor, doesn't like that idea but thinks it might be better than the alternative.
"It's probably not a great idea, but it might be better than getting rid of classroom teachers," Taylor said.
The school superintendent will go over the budget at 7:00 Tuesday night. It will be held at the government complex in building F. There will time for public comments at that meeting as well as another one on March 6.
